1. Rangers told to ensure movement of goods transport
• Approving a coronavirus relief package of Rs1,200 billion, Prime Minister Imran Khan on March 31, 2 020 took serious notice of suspension of goods transport in the country despite his earlier order for its restoration and tasked Rangers in Sindh with ensuring its implementation by taking appropriate measures for movement of trucks and opening of industries amid a complete lockdown in the province.
• The decision was taken at a meeting of the federal cabinet which also approved issuance of Rs700bn Domestic Sukuk Bonds (DSB) for three years to provide some support to the country`s economy being affected by the global coronavirus pandemic and address the issue of liquidity.
• `Prime Minister Imran Khan was quite annoyed that the decision taken by the National Coordination Committee (NCC), in which all provinces and mainstream opposition parties have representation, was not implemented in letter and spirit by the Sindh government by not easing the movement of goods transport from the country`s commercial hub and port city Karachi,` Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said at a post-cabinet meeting press conference
2. Groceries to open from 9am to 5pm
• Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar has approved new timing/schedule for the grocery and general stores in the province in a bid to check coronavirus spread.
• According to the schedule, general stores and groceries will remain open from 9am to 5pm.
• Medical stores and pharmacies will be exempt from it. The new timing will be enforced from April 1 (today).
• The decision has been taken in the interest of the people
3. Railways operations suspended for indefinite period
• The Pakistan Railways on March 31, 2020 extended notification of suspension of its entire operations for an indefinite period.
• The passengers having confirmed reservations in any train have been requested to either travel by any train or get refund of their tickets as soon as the PR resumes its operation in future, according to a press release issued by the PR.
• On the other hand, officials have opposed continuation of work at the Pakistan Railways headquarters, workshops, carriage and sleeper factories, freight trains` operations and other workplaces at a time when everyone needs social distancing to avert Covid-19. They have also expressed fear of the coronavirus spread if the PR continues carrying routine work at its departments
4. Jang Group`s publisher Mir Javed passes away
• Jang Group`s publisher Mir Javed-urRehman passed away on March 31, 2020. He was 73.
• Born in New Delhi in 1946, Mr Rehman was suffering from lung cancer and undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Karachi.
• He was the elder of two sons of Mir Khalil-ur-Rehman, the founder of Jang Group, and brother of Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman, who is the editor-in-chief of the media group.
• After taking charge of Jang Group, Mir Javed carried forward his father`s legacy and expanded the media group.
5. Three EU states send medical gear to Iran under deal to bypass sanctions
• European nations have delivered medical goods to Iran in the first transaction under the Instex mechanism set up to bypass American sanctions on Tehran, the German foreign ministry said on March 31, 2020.
• `France, Germany and the United Kingdom confirm that Instex has successfully concluded its first transaction, facilitating the export of medical goods from Europe to Iran.
• These goods are now in Iran,` the ministry said in a statement.
• The first successful transaction comes over a year after Britain, France and Germany announced the creation of Instex, months that have been marked by Iranian chafing against European delay
6. Russia`s top doctor who met Putin tests positive
• The head of Moscow`s main coronavirus hospital who met with President Vladimir Putin a week ago has tested positive, he said on March 31, 2020, as the Kremlin announced the Russian leader`s health was fine.
• Last Tuesday Denis Protsenko met with the Russian leader who inspected the Kommunarka hospital while wearing a bright yellow hazmat suit.
• But the 67-year-old Putin was also seen talking to Protsenko without any protective gear.
7. S. Arabia advises Muslims to defer Haj plans
• Saudi Arabia`s Haj minister asked Muslims on March 31, 2020 to temporarily defer preparations for Haj amid uncertainty over the pandemic.
• Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia suspended Umrah over fears of the new coronavirus.
• `Saudi Arabia is fully ready to serve pilgrims,` Haj minister Mohammad Benten told the state-run Al Ekhbariya television.
• `But under the current circumstances, as we are talking about the global pandemic… the kingdom is keen to protect the health of Muslims and citizens and so we have asked our brother Muslims in all countries to wait before doing Haj contracts until the situation is clear
8. Taliban team arrives in Kabul to monitor prisoner release
• A three-member Taliban technical team arrived on March 31, 2020 in the Afghan capital to monitor the release of their prisoners as part of a peace deal signed by the Taliban and the US, a spokesman for the insurgent group said.
• Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed the team`s arrival in a tweet. It marked the first time a Taliban delegation has been in Kabul since the group was driven out by the US-led coalition in November 2001.
• There was no immediate comment from the Afghan government on the team`s arrival.
9. India seals off Tableeghi Jamaat HQ
• India sealed off the headquarters of a Muslim missionary group on March 31, 2020 and ordered an investigation into accusations it held religious meetings that officials fear may have infected dozens of people with coronavirus.
• India has registered 1,251 cases of coronavirus, 32 of whom have died. The numbers are small compared with the United States, Italy and China, but health officials say India, the world`s second most populous country, faces a huge surge that could overwhelm its weak public health system.
• One of the coronavirus hot spots that the government of the capital, New Delhi, has flagged is a Muslim quarter where the 100-year-old Tableeghi Jamaat group is based, after dozens of people tested positive for the virus and at least seven died
10. Lancashire chairman dies of coronavirus
• Lancashire chairman David Hodgkiss has died after contracting coronavirus.
• Hodgkiss, 71, is thought to be the first individual directly involved in professional British sport to die having tested positive for Covid-19.
• Hodgkiss served the Red Rose with distinction for more than two decades, as board member, treasurer and vice-chairman before he succeeded Michael Cairns in 2017. The county have not given a cause of death but a spokesman confirmed to the PA news agency that it was `coronavirus-related
