December 27, 2021: National / International Current Affairs

1. First-ever security policy being unveiled today

• The government is announcing the first-ever National Security Policy of the country on December 27, 2021 (today) at a meeting in which civil and military leadership will discuss internal and external security issues.
• According to Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, Prime Minister Imran Khan has called a meeting of the high-powered National Security Committee which will be attended, among others, by senior military officials, including Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa and Inter Services Intelligence Director General Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum.
• `It will be the first-ever National Security Policy to be approved at the meeting and later it will be made public,` the minister said

2. Taliban bar women from long trips without male escort

• Afghanistan`s Taliban authorities said on December 26, 2021 that women seeking to travel long distances should not be offered road transport unless they are accompanied by a close male relative.
• The guidance issued by the Ministry for the Promotion of virtue and Prevention of vice called on vehicle owners to refuse rides to women not wearing headscarves.
• The move follows the Taliban barring many women in public-sector roles from returning to work in the wake of their August 15 seizure of power, and as girls remain largely cut off from state secondary schooling

3. Schools told to be vigilant against corporal punishment as new law comes into force

• The Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) has directed heads of all institutions to be vigilant against corporal punishment as a stringent law in this regard has been passed by the parliament and has come into force in the capital.
• Under the new law, teachers found involved in corporal punishment could face compulsory retirement and dismissal from service.
• The FDE, which regulates 423 educational institutions in the capital, through a letter dated Dec 22 directed the heads of institutions to ensure strict compliance with the instructions failing which major penalties may be imposed on the individuals proven guilty

4. Putin to mull options if West refuses guarantees over Ukraine

• Russian President Vladimir Putin said on December 26, 2021 he would ponder a slew of options if the West fails to meet his push for security guarantees precluding Nato`s expansion to Ukraine.
• Earlier this month, Moscow submitted draft security documents demanding that Nato deny membership to Ukraine and other former Soviet countries and roll back its military deployments in Central and Eastern Europe.
• Putin has urged the West to move quickly to meet the demands, warning that Moscow will have to take adequate military-technical measures if the West continues its aggressive course on the threshold of our home

5. Iran, Hezbollah aid strikes by Houthis: Saudi-led coalition

• The Saudi-led coalition on December 26, 2021 accused Iran and Hezbollah of helping Yemen`s Houthi rebels to launch missiles and drones at the kingdom, where two people were killed.
• Since the coalition intervened almost seven years ago to support Yemen`s government, Saudi Arabia has regularly accused Iran of supplying the Houthis with sophisticated weapons and Hezbollah of training the insurgents.
• Tehran denies the charges. Lebanon`s Iran-backed Shia militant movement Hezbollah has previously denied sending fighters or weapons to Yemen

6. Switzerland to allow simple gender transition from Jan 1

• People in Switzerland will be able to legally change gender by a visit to the civil registry office from Jan 1, putting the country at the forefront of Europe`s gender self identification movement.
• Switzerland joins Ireland, Belgium, Portugal and Norway as one of the few countries on the continent that allow a person to legally change gender without hormone therapy, medical diagnosis or further evaluation or bureaucratic steps.
• Under the new rules written into Switzerland`s civil code, anyone aged 16 and above who is not under legal guardianship will be able to adjust their gender and legal name by self-declaration at the civil registry office. Younger people and those under adult protection will require guardian consent

7. Israel approves plan to double settler population in Golan

• Israel`s government on Sunday approved a $317 million plan to double the Jewish settler population in the Golan Heights, 40 years after it annexed the territory captured from Syria.
• Prime Minister Naftali Bennett`s cabinet voted in favour of the plan that aims to build 7,300 settler homes in the region over a five-year period, during a meeting held at the Mevo Hama community in the Golan.
• Itcallsfor1 billion Israeli shekels to be spent on housing, infrastructure and other projects with the goal of attracting roughly 23,000 new Jewish settlers to the area, seized during the 1967 Six Day War

8. CA chief insists Pakistan tour will go ahead despite Covid spike

• Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley has said that his team is committed to touring Pakistan in March next year and the series won`t be cancelled despite fresh concerns emerging over the new Omicron strain of Covid-19.
• Australia are scheduled to tour Pakistan for three Tests, three ODIs and a one-off T20, with the month-long series beginning on March 3.
• This will be Australia`s first Test tour of the country in 24 years.
• Due to the security issues in Pakistan, the two countries have met only in Australia, UAE and England since 1998

9. Anti-apartheid icon Desmond Tutu dies at 90

• South African anti-apartheid icon Archbishop Desmond Tutu, described as the country`s moral compass, died on Sunday aged 90, sparking an outpouring of tributes for the outspoken Nobel peace laureate.
• Tutu, who had largely faded from public life in recent years, was remembered for his easy humour and characteristic smile and above all his tireless fight against injustices of all colours.

10. Poet Sarfraz Shahid passes away

• Eminent Urdu humorous poet Sarfraz Shahid passed away after protracted illness on December 26, 2021. He was 83.
• Sarfraz Shahid was born in Ghakhar Mandi in Gujranwala and served at the Pakistan Meteorological Department for 30 years before his retirement as director.
• He was the recipient of numerous awards.
• The Pride of Performance Award was conferred on him by former president Mamnoon Hussain in recognition of his contribution to literature on the eve of 70th Independence Day.
