1. New rules in the works to meet FATF conditions

• The government is set to introduce new rules on forfeiture, management and auction of properties and assets relating to Anti-Money Laundering (AML) cases and transfer of investigations and prosecution of AML cases from police, provincial anti-corruption establishments (ACEs) and other similar agencies to specialised agencies to achieve remaining benchmarks of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
• This is part of two sets of rules including the AML (Forfeited Properties Management) Rules 2021 and the AML (Referral) Rules 2021 under the National Policy Statement on Follow the Money approved by the federal cabinet meeting a few days ago

2. Pakistan Navy participates in exercises with US, Canada

• A Pakistan Navy Ship (PNS) Saif participated in the focused operation Chinook Archer along with ships and aircraft of the United States and Canada in Arabian Sea.
• Pakistan Navy ships are regularly deployed for its initiative of regional maritime security patrol to ensure maritime security in the Indian Ocean region.
• In addition, as part of CTF-150, PNS Saif took part in the focused operation Chinook Archer along with the American and Canadian ships and aircraft

3. Saudi Arabia could help reduce tensions between Pakistan, India: minister

• Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud has said his country could play a role in reducing tensions between Pakistan and India.
• He said so while responding to a question during an interview with Pakistan Television that dealt in considerable detail with Prime Minister Imran Khan`s three-day official visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
• Prince Faisal praised the two nuclear-armed neighbours for reviving and reinstating a ceasefire along the restive Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Kashmir region. He termed the move `an excellent step in the right direction`

4. Pakistan suggests framework to deal with Covid shocks

• Pakistan has urged the international community to develop a post-pandemic framework for development to recover from the shocks of the Covid-19 crisis.
• At the 2021 UN Development Cooperation Forum (DCF) meeting in New York, Pakistan suggested involving every region in the fight against the pandemic, noting that `every region, state and community have experiences and knowledge to share`.

5. Sadiq Khan elected London mayor for another term

• Sadiq Khan was elected mayor of London for a second term in a tighter-than expected race, providinga boost to the opposition Labour party after a series of disappointing results in May 09, 2021`s local elections, Al Jazeera reported on Sunday.
• Khan, who became the first Muslim to head a major Western capital after his victory in 2016, won 55.2 per cent of the votes compared to 44.8pc for Shaun Bailey, the candidate from the ruling Conservative party.
• Turnout was 42pc, lower than at the previous election in 2016, said Al Jazeera

6. Hundreds of Palestinians wounded in Jerusalem clashes

• Israel vowed on May 09, 2021 to restore order in Jerusalem after hundreds of Palestinian protesters were wounded in a weekend of clashes with Israeli forces, as a key court hearing on a flashpoint property dispute was postponed.
• The area around the Al Aqsa mosque has seen several nights of violence, the worst since 2017, fuelled by a years-long bid by Jewish settlers to take over nearby Palestinian homes in Israeli annexed east Jerusalem.
• Ahead of the weekly cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Israel would `decisively and responsibly impose law and order in Jerusalem`

7. Cyberattack shuts down major fuel pipeline in US

• Top US fuel pipeline operator Colonial Pipeline worked on Sunday to recover from a ransomware cyberattack that forced it to shut down on Friday and sparked worries of a spike in retail gasoline prices.
• Colonial said on Saturday it was `continuing to monitor the impact of this temporary service halt` and to work to restore service. It did not give an estimate for a restart date and declined further comment on Sunday.
• The incident is one of the most disruptive digital ransom operations ever reported and has prompted calls from American lawmakers to tighten protections for critical US energy infrastructure against hackers

8. Scotland vote sets up fresh independence clash with London

• The Scottish National Party on May 10, 2021 said its landslide victory in Edinburgh`s devolved parliament was grounds for a fresh independence referendum, despite opposition from London.
• While the SNP campaigned on promises to hold a new vote, the UK government which would need to give formal legal permission is opposed, raising fears of a protracted political and legal battle.
• Now the nationalists say their slightly increased share of seats, one short of an overall majority of 65, gives them a mandate for `indyref2`, so called after the `no` vote in Scotland`s first independence referendum in 2014

9. Chinese rocket breaks up over Indian Ocean off Maldives

• Remnants of China`s biggest rocket landed in the Indian Ocean on May 10, 2021, with most of its components destroyed upon re-entry into the atmosphere, ending days of speculation over where the debris would hit.
• The coordinates given by Chinese state media, citing the China Manned Space Engineering Office, put the point of impact in the ocean, west of the Maldives archipelago.
• Debris from the Long March 5B has had some people looking warily skyward since it blasted off from China`s Hainan island on April 29, but the China Manned Space Engineering Office said most of the debris was burnt up in the atmosphere

10. Popular yester year actor Talat Siddiqui is no more

• Celebrated TV, radio and film personality Talat Siddiqui passed away here after a protracted illness. She was 82.
• She was the mother of actor Arifa Siddiqui and veteran dancer Nahid Siddiqui, and an aunt of noted singer Fariha Pervaiz. She was laid to rest on Sunday in a graveyard near her residence near Canal View Society.
• She was considered one of the most renowned actresses of the country. Most popular among her films were hits such as Dilnasheen, Kaliya and Haider Sultan. She had bid the industry goodbye around three decades ago.
