1. Bill tabled for `preventive detention` of terror suspects

In a significant move, the government on Friday quietly introduced a crucial bill in the National Assembly, seeking to grant military and civil armed forces the authority to keep individuals facing terrorism charges in `preventive` detention for up to three months.
Deputy Speaker Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah referred the bill, which proposes amendments to the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) 1997, to the relevant committee for consideration immediately after Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar tabled it in the closing moments of a thinly attended session, without explaining its salient features


2. Children among eight dead in Mastung bombing

At least eight people, including five schoolchildren and a policeman, were martyred and over 30 injured in a bomb blast near a girl`s school and a hospital in Mastung town, some 50km south-east of Quetta, on Friday.
Officials said the target of the remote-controlled blast was a police vehicle heading to Mastung district hospital to pick up polio vaccinators to escort them to different neighbourhoods as part of the nationwide immunisation drive being run from Oct 28 to Nov 3.


3. Ordinance giving more powers to top judge lands in Senate

A controversial ordinance promulgated by President Asif Ali Zardari in September giving a dominant role to the chief justice of Pakistan in the formation of benches landed in the Senate on Friday.
The Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) (Amendment) Ordinance 2024, was laid in the house by Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar and referred to the standing committee concerned by the deputy chairman.
According to sources, the ordinance is likely to be placed before the house in the form of a bill next week


4. Pakistan, Qatar to explore ways to expand ties

Pakistan and Qatar have agreed to deepen cooperation and explore new horizons to strengthen bilateral ties, underscoring the importance of high-level exchanges to enhance mutual understanding, trade and investments.
Bilateral ties were discussed during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif`s two-day official visit to the Gulf state which ended on Friday.
The PM held meetings with Qatari emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani


5. CM cannot completely ban transfers and postings, LHC rules

The Lahore High Court has ruled that the law does not allow the chief minister to place a complete ban on the transfer/ posting of government officials.
`Chief Minister can exercise powers and perform functions within the limitations defined and contours prescribed through legislative fiat,` Justice Asim Hafeez holds in a judgement, setting aside a March 1, 2024, notification approved by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
